The children’s program, that runs from 8:00-8:30PM on Friday evenings on Chinese Radio Seattle, has enjoyed great popularity with Chinese children and parents since it began airing. Alongside the "Appreciating Western Literature" segment hosted by Lily Xie, they also feature a segment hosted by recipient of the President’s Award for Educational Achievement and senior host of Chinese Radio Seattle, Sam Gong. Sam Gong presents a segment in which he tells the stories of Chinese history in a simple, yet profound and fascinating way, as well as an easy-to-understand segment on fables, aimed at primary school students.
Sam Gong —— Senior host of Chinese Radio Seattle, He went on to explain the intention behind creating the "Appreciating Western Literature" segment, as well as inviting a young Canadian host: "The 'Appreciating Western Literature' segment created by Chinese Radio Seattle is a quality public welfare education program specifically aimed at primary and middle school children. The main objective will be to select and introduce European and American literary classics that feature in American middle school syllabi and provide a more vivid and interesting reading 'index'. This will allow middle school students in grades 9-12 to enhance their knowledge and appreciation of literature through reading classic works and allow them to better understand western culture. Furthermore, in order to comply with Chinese families' Chinese language educational needs, Chinese Radio Seattle's 'Appreciating Western Literature" segment also intentionally compiles western literary works referenced in Chinese middle school syllabi. This will allow Chinese children to better compare the various characteristics of America, Canada and China in reference to 'Appreciating Western Literature' and experience the differences first-hand by listening to the show: This is where the difference lies between Chinese Radio Seattle’s children’s program and that of other Chinese cultural medias."
Interestingly, "Appreciating Western Literature" is not Lily’s first time taking on the role of presenter. Lily has many fans of her iQIYI "Lily Talk Show". Lily was born into an extremely cultured and versatile household. Previously, her talent with piano won her the "2018 Canadian Young Artist Standards of Excellence Award". Lily adores reading. Each time she returns to China, she stuffs her luggage with both English and Chinese language books that she insists on reading daily back in Vancouver. She is also currently planning welfare exchange projects for children of different ethnicities to read together (online) and donate books (offline). Lily quoted English philosopher Francis Bacon, saying: "Reading makes a full man, conference a ready man and writing an exact man.” In fact, this is precisely the attitude towards study that a middle school student should have when reading masterpiece works of western literature. "I hope to use my limited knowledge to inspire people to become more educated in this area than myself, to expand my knowledge of literature of all kinds and incite passion in the study of the crucial topics of reading, writing and debate in Chinese primary and middle school students across the 'two coasts and three lands'. The 'two coasts and three lands' that I refer to, does not just mean the lands of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, I’m referring to the greater scale of the two coasts of the Pacific Ocean and the three lands of Seattle, Vancouver and Beijing."
Lily may be young, but she is a girl of very broad horizons — the two Pacific coasts that she speaks of, as well as the three lands of Seattle, Vancouver and Beijing are now connected by the airwaves. During the recent pandemic, everyone has got a first-hand experience of the charming educational revolution that the internet provides. Online classes have broken down our old geographical boundaries. All we need is an internet connection and the Chinese children of China, America, Canada and the entire world can all listen to one channel and hear Lily talk about western literary classics with her soothing voice and melodic Beijing accent.
Lily is the first "external" host of the Chinese Radio Seattle’s children’s program, which marks yet another bold attempt on behalf of the radio station. The senior host of Chinese Radio Seattle, Sam said: "We originally made this decision based on having set our base in Seattle as the top Chinese cultural media spot in Washington and the entire United States, with a view of integrating and creating mutual financial prospects between the two cities of Seattle and Vancouver. The idea of bringing in an external host even underwent careful research before receiving the approval of Chinese Radio Seattle’s higher-ups! The joining of a middle-school student Lily Xie serves as a sign of Chinese Radio Seattle’s promotion of Seattle-Vancouver integration and 'Seattle-Vancouver Economic Unification'. *Editor’s note — the Greater Seattle Partnership (GSP) signed the "Cascadia Economic Opportunity Initiative" (CEOI) with the Vancouver Economic Council (VEC). Arrangement of pioneering integration and cooperation in the field of media communication — In this futuristic plan of integration between the two cities, they took the lead in expanding youth education and cultural exchange. This will allow primary, middle and high school students, with a particular focus on those of Chinese heritage, to take the lead in sharing and exchanging educational materials through the integration of broadcasting and media communication.
public survey from August 2019 shows that: 59% of citizens of Greater Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada believe that they have built a stronger relationship with Seattle; 66% of Greater Vancouver citizens believe that they have more in common with residents of Seattle than those of Toronto or Montreal. The Seattle Times noted that the Seattle-Vancouver economic corridor is set to become a super economic belt with a length of 600KM and a financial cost of 900 billion US dollars. It will be a model for American and Canadian cross-border economic cooperation. It is predicted that by 2040, 20% of commuting between Vancouver, Seattle and Portland will be conducted via high-speed railway, and the commute time between Seattle and Vancouver will be under an hour. The Seattle-Vancouver economic corridor will create global economic influence across North America. Chinese Radio Seattle has observed the trends and dares to make pioneering steps in taking cultural communication between the younger generations of two integrated cities as their lead into the future. This experience and knowledge will serve as their vision and guiding wisdom into the future!
